Whether it’s true freshman Wes Lunt or redshirt freshman J.W. Walsh starting against Texas on Saturday, it’s been awhile since a freshman quarterback has been able to hook the Longhorns.
The last man to do it — former Oklahoma University quarterback Sam Bradford in 2007. In the Red River Rivalry matchup, Bradford completed 21 of 32 passes for 244 yards and 3 touchdowns.
The quarterbacks, who were more experienced that have topped the Longhorns in the last five years were pretty talented, with several in the NFL.
Bradford was the Rams’ first pick in 2010. Former Oklahoma State University quarterback Brandon Weeden who beat Texas in 2010 and 2011, is starting for the Cleveland Browns. 2007 Kansas State quarterback Josh Freeman is starting with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Former Texas Tech quarterback Graham Harrell, who knocked off Texas when they were No. 1 in 2008, worked his way to being Aaron Rodgers’ backup in Green Bay. Stephen McGee who played for Texas A&M in 2007 appeared in games for the Dallas Cowboys in 2010 and 2011. Greg McElroy, who beat the Longhorns in the 2010 National Championship with Alabama is the New York Jets’ third-string quarterback.
