Fireworks were displayed at David Allen Memorial Ballpark following the Enid Majors’ game against Hutchinson Thursday night. Pitcher Tobin Mateychick showed the overflow crowd some explosive stuff during the game.

The Majors’ right-hander torched the Cardinals with 13 strikeouts and a complete-game one hitter. Enid added some late offensive pop to win 11-0 in six innings on the first day of the Fourth of July Tournament.

Mateychick worked around five walks and one hit batter. He allowed just one Hutchinson batter to reach third base.

“I know I’ve got to go out there and do what I can to get outs,” Mateychick said. “As the game went on, I felt like I improved.”

Mateychick fired 51/3 hitless innings before Todd Schultz blooped a single into right field with one out in the bottom of the sixth.

The Majors took a 5-0 lead in the fifth, helped by three Hutchinson errors.

Cody Passmore led off with walk, then stole second. David Grellner reached when pitcher Jason Borchardt’s throw to first was not in time. Caleb Nine reached when shortstop Dustin Minchew’s throw to first was wild, scoring Passmore and Grellner.

Newt Compton struck a one-out single. Andy Dowers followed with a two-run double to left center. Zach Gonzalez then reached on Mace Krol’s errant throw, which plated Dowers.

Enid added six more runs in the sixth. Compton drew a bases-loaded walk to score Passmore. Nick Rountree followed with a three-run double off the left field wall, then scored on Dowers’ triple. Zach Gonzalez then drilled an RBI single to right.

Rountree led Enid with three hits, including two doubles. Dowers had two hits and three RBI.

“We saw the ball a little bit better today,” said Johnson, who also had a solo homer in the sixth. “We really wanted to step it up.”

Seth Sturgeon tallied seven strikeouts and scattered three hits to get the complete-game win.

All three of the Area AAAs hits came in a three-run third inning.
