For a few minutes, former Enid High School standout Zach Gonzalez stole the headlines.

But with one swing of the bat, Blake Johnson stole them right back.

After Gonzalez tied the game in the top of the seventh inning with a two-out solo homer, Johnson delivered a solo shot of his own to lead off the bottom half of the inning, giving Northern Oklahoma College Enid a dramatic 5-4 victory over NOC Tonkawa in the first game of a doubleheader at David Allen Memorial Ballpark.

The Mavericks got revenge in the second game to salvage one game of the four-game series, outlasting the Jets 16-10.

The twinbill split gave NOC Enid a 20-11 overall record and a 3-1 mark in the Oklahoma Collegiate Athletic Conference. The Mavericks adjusted to 16-11 overall and 1-3 in the league.

“A 3-1 start in conference is a good start,’’ said NOC Enid coach Raydon Leaton. “If you win three of four games every series, you’ll have a chance to win the conference.’’

In Sunday’s opener, NOC Enid starter Caleb Taylor was one out away from closing out the Mavericks when Gonzalez crushed a long homer to deep left center field to tie the game 4-4.

Johnson led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk-off homer off NOC Tonkawa starter Derek Epps, a former Pioneer High School and Enid American Legion standout pitcher, setting off a wild celebration for the Jets at home plate.

“Blake has been our hottest bat for the last two weeks,’’ said Leaton. “He got the barrel to the ball and when he does, he can hit it a long way.’’

Tyler Dowse, who got the final out in the top of the seventh, was credited with the win.

Taylor scattered nine hits with four strikeouts. Epps, who topped out at 91 mph on the stadium radar gun, allowed nine hits and struck out one.

“Caleb threw well,’’ said Leaton. “He executed his pitches and was hitting his spots.’’

Matt Abel, Sean Bignall, Dan Skelly and Austin Dean also had RBI hits for the Jets.

Juan Carlos Martinez had two hits for the Mavericks, including a solo homer to lead off the game.

The opener featured some terrific defense, including an athletic play by Johnson at catcher. NOC Tonkawa’s Taylor Estes popped up a bunt attempt and Johnson leaped to snare the ball before scrambling to his knees and doubling off a runner at first base.

NOC Enid left fielder Bignall turned in an impressive catch when he raced to the wall to rob Wes Moody of an extra-base hit.

The Mavericks flashed some good defense, as well. Martinez at second base made a tough glove stop to his left to begin a 4-6-3 double-play.

In the nightcap, Gonzalez ripped a two-run homer down the left field line to highlight a seven-run first inning. The Mavericks got a three-run blast from Trevor Long in the second inning to jump out to an 11-0 lead.

But the Jets whittled away at the lead, and narrowed the gap to three runs on Skelly’s three-run double down the left field line in the fifth inning.

“I was proud of our guys for cutting the lead down to three,’’ said Leaton.

Estes homered in the sixth for the Mavericks and Wilfredo Rosario homered in the seventh to give NOC Tonkawa insurance runs.

Rosario went 5-for-5 with a homer, two doubles and three RBI. Long finished with five RBI and Moody had three hits as the Mavericks knocked out 18 hits in the game.

Jacob Zinn led the Jets with three hits while Keith Todd and James Madison each had two hits.

NOC Enid third baseman Jacob Inbody had one of the more unusual games of his career. Inbody was struck by four pitches and drew a walk and did not record an official plate appearance in five at-bats. The Jets will be idle until hosting Carl Albert State on Thursday for two games at David Allen.
