The outcome wasn’t as lopsided as in recent years, but Enid’s chance to knock off Tulsa Union ended much the same Thursday night at D. Bruce Selby Stadium.

The top-ranked Redskins used a handful of big plays en route to a 34-14 victory in front of 5,000 fans in the District 6A-3 opener.

Union running back Jeremy Smith rushed for 127 yards and two touchdowns, while quarterback Brandon Rogers passed for 231 yards and a pair of touchdowns, as the Redskins beat the Plainsmen for the 12th straight time.

The victory improved Union’s series record to 12-4 against the Plainsmen.

The Redskins rolled up 436 total yards, including 201 yards rushing and 235 yards passing. Enid had 214 total yards — 76 yards rushing and 138 yards passing.

The Plainsmen had their moments against the Redskins, but just not enough of them.

After spotting Union a 7-0 lead in the first period, the Plainsmen drove 63 yards to the Union 17, but Nick Ciliberti’s 34-yard field goal try was wide left.

Three plays into Union’s ensuing drive, Rogers hit Anthony Foster on a 76-yard touchdown pass for a 14-0 lead. Foster earlier had caught a 5-yard touchdown pass. Rogers finished with 15 completions on 21 attempts, and Foster had five catches for 108 yards.

Enid’s Cody Camacho recovered a fumble, the first of three he would recover in the game, early in the second period at the Enid 15 to snuff out a Union march.

Enid quarterback Clint Chelf hit Ky’ale Lloyd for a 50-yard pass play, then scrambled 32 yards to the Union 3. Three plays later, Chelf scored on a 1-yard dive.

Chelf’s final passing numbers (12 of 29 for 138 yards) were better than they look. Unofficially, Enid dropped eight passes. Lloyd finished with three catches for 80 yards.

After Enid’s score, Union was on the board again 21 seconds later when Smith dashed 62 yards for a touchdown that gave the Redskins a 21-7 lead.

Union made it 28-7 on its next series as Smith broke several tackles on an 11-yard scoring run.

Enid tried to narrow the gap five minutes later when Chelf hit Boe Burleson for a 23-yard touchdown pass on fourth down. But Chelf was ruled beyond the line of scrimmage when he threw the pass, and the score was nullified.

Union kicker Tress Way booted a 38-yard field goal at the end of the half for a 31-7 lead.

Enid safety Brett Kenaga intercepted a pass at the Enid 3 early in the second period to stop a Union drive.

But Way added a 26-yard field goal for a 34-7 lead later in the third period.

Camacho recovered two fumbles in the fourth period, including one he took 69 yards for a touchdown with a minute left.

Union beat the Plainsmen on the scoreboard and in uniforms worn. The Redskins traveled with about 130 players who required five buses to transport them to Enid. The Plainsmen have 70 players on the roster.

Thursday’s game was attended by former Enid coaches Ron Lancaster and Craig Simmons. Lancaster now is the head coach at Broken Arrow and Simmons is his assistant. They were scouting the game in preparation for Enid’s game Oct. 5 against Broken Arrow.

Another Enid connection was Union sophomore defensive back Luke Snider. He is the son of the late Gary Snider, a former Enid football assistant who died June 18. Luke Snider played in the fourth period.

The Plainsmen will try to get back on the winning track next Friday at Ponca City. The Wildcats play at Del City tonight.
