ENID, Okla. — The stakes continue to grow for the teams fighting for a berth into the Connie Mack World Series. Three days after wrapping up the Oklahoma State Tournament, David Allen Memorial Ballpark and Northern Oklahoma College Enid's Failing Field are set to host the South Plains Regional, which begins Wednesday.
At the conclusion of this week's five-day competition, the last squad standing of the 16-team, double-elimination bracket secures a trip to Farmington, N.M., for the World Series, which runs from July 26 - Aug. 3.
As the host team, the Enid Majors earned an automatic bid to the Regional Tournament. The Majors (20-5) were eliminated from last week's State Tournament after a 1-2 record in pool play. Enid opens its regional tournament run against West Texas at 8:15 p.m. Wednesday at David Allen Memorial Ballpark.
If the Majors win, they'll play again at 8:15 p.m. Thursday. If the Majors lose, they'll play at 10 a.m. at NOC Enid.
Oklahoma State Tournament champion, MVP Seng, and runner-up, Woodward Travelers, are also among the teams in the tournament. MVP Seng, coached by Enid native Tyson Seng, faces Frozen Ropes Thornton (Texas) at NOC Enid Wednesday at 10 a.m.
The Travelers, who were awarded a spot in the Regional because MVP Seng had already qualified, take on 2018 South Plains Regional runner-up Texas Stix Black at David Allen Wednesday at 1:30 p.m.
Other Oklahoma teams include Oklahoma Drillers AAA, Sandlot Ballard and Shockers Red. The remaining eight participating teams are Phenom (Texas), 417 Baseball (Mo.), D-Bat Griffin (Texas), DFW Twins (Texas), DMCarpenter (Texas), Midwest National (Mo.), Prime Caveman—Garcia (Texas), West Texas Elite.
The South Plains Regional is one of just two World Series qualifier tournaments yet to be decided. So far, the 10 World Series qualifiers are Frozen Ropes Florence (Texas), Phenom Texas, Florida Legends, Midland Redskins (Ohio), SoCal Renegades (Calif.), Nashville Knights (Tenn.), South Troy Dodgers (N.Y.), En Fuego Baseball (Wash.) and Four Corners (N.M.).
The 16 teams are split into two eight-team brackets. The two remaining teams will play for the regional championship Sunday at David Allen. If both teams reach Sunday's final without a loss, they'll play a best-of-three series with games at 9 a.m., noon and 2 p.m. If only one of the teams has zero losses, the first game will start at noon with an if necessary game scheduled for 2 p.m.
The 2018 South Plains Regional champion Lonestar (Texas) is not in the field.
All tournament games from David Allen Memorial Ballpark will be live streamed at www.jockjivesports.com.
In addition, all Enid Majors' games can be heard on KCRC (AM 1390).
