Have a merry Christmas even if you don't feel like it

Ruth Ann Replogle

I had a different plan for today’s column, but then I heard this hymn cue up on my iPod, and I was directed to change course.

“Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father/There is no shadow of turning with Thee/Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not/As Thou hast been Thou forever wilt be.

“Great is Thy faithfulness! Great is Thy faithfulness!/Morning by morning new mercies I see/All I have needed Thy hand hath provided/Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!

“Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth/Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide/Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow/Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!”

I am thankful for this, aren’t you, friend?

While the world around us seems to be in constant turmoil with hatefulness and deceit spilling from every corner, our Lord stays the same as He was, is, and always will be.

That spoke volumes to my heart today.

His compassion is unwavering. I am reminded that His grace covers me no matter what.

It doesn’t matter if others condemn me, spit in my face, stab me in the back, say ugly things to me, toss me aside … I am His and He is mine.

Nothing that the world says or does to me honestly matters in the whole scheme of things.

My human side wants to be angry, frustrated, stressed, prideful, selfish, on and on. There are plenty of reasons to be upset about in today’s world.

But my spirit, His Spirit within, rests in a peace that surpasses any understanding. Sometimes I can’t even fathom it.

My God provides me with strength to continue on days when I deep down think I can’t.

He offers me a hope that shouldn’t be with all the depressing things that press in, but it’s there nevertheless.

He cheers me on and guides me along. It may not be like a coach yelling from the sidelines, but rather a quiet nudging at my side to keep going.

My every need has been taken care of, whether I’m fully aware of it or not.

I’m sure it’s different for each believer.

Whatever the case may be, He is faithful. All. The. Time.

Our Lord is amazing.

“Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.” — Hebrews 10:23
