ENID, Okla. — United Way of Enid and Northwest Oklahoma is inviting the community to participate in its annual World Day of Kindness on Nov. 13.

"A variety of activities are scheduled throughout the community on that day, such as delivering planned and random acts of kindness to area schools, quality-of-life projects for senior citizens, replenishing supplies for Loaves & Fishes and Salvation Army, and other acts of kindness throughout the day," said Dan Schiedel, CEO of United Way of Enid & NW Oklahoma.

Schiedel said fundraising and participation look to be up for this year's Day of Kindness, with more than 200 volunteers already signed up.

But, he said, "We can always use more people, and if someone's interested in volunteering, we can find a place for them to help."

Or, individuals, families, and employee groups can plan their own "random acts of kindness," Schiedel said.

"A random act of kindness can be as simple as paying for someone's coffee or a meal or offering assistance with groceries," Schiedel said. "Kindness doesn't need to cost anything. Opening a door for someone, speaking a kind word, or greeting another person with a smile can make all the difference in someone's day."

Salvation Army of Enid will serve a free lunch from its canteen near Garfield County Court House lawn, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., for any who wish to attend.

Enid Community Clinic, 1106 E. Broadway, will be open for a free nurses' clinic, with health screenings and flu shots, 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. for Day of Kindness. Volunteers will serve a free hot dog cookout, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., in front of the clinic.

Anyone in need of a smoke alarm for their home can sign up to have volunteers install a free smoke alarm during Day of Kindness. Sign-up for the smoke alarm installations is through RSVP of Enid, at (580) 233-5914.

For anyone looking for a way to participate in Day of Kindness, who doesn't have time to volunteer, Schiedel suggested the Enid Santa for Seniors program, through RSVP of Enid, and the Diaper Bank at CDSA, as "excellent ideas for families and employees to gather supplies to help make a difference in the lives of others."

"If you don't have time to do the shopping, you can make a donation and United Way will be happy to make the act of kindness happen on your behalf," Schiedel said.

Schiedel requested groups planning special activities for the Day of Kindness to contact the United Way office at (580) 237-0821 as soon as possible.

"United Way would like to coordinate the timing of as many activities as possible in order to capture them on film or video," Schiedel said. "The purpose isn't to give credit to any one individual; it is to encourage others to be moved to good deeds and to begin thinking more of others."

Sponsors for Day of Kindness include NextEra Energy, Mike and Kelley Wright, Mid-Continent, Jiffy Trip, Mid-America, ADM Milling, Dillingham Insurance, Allen Family Foundation, POPE Distributing, Pioneer Cellular, Community Clinic, On Point Resources, Culligan of Enid, Salvation Army, Rob and Mary Stallings, Oxbow Calcining, BancCentral, Great Plains Bank, Northwest Oklahoma Osteopathic Foundation, Dandy's Donuts, Deli & Delights and Autry Technology Center.
