Staff reports

Lawmen, including Gar-field County Sheriff's deputies and state forestry officials, were investigating whether hay bale fires -- one Friday and one Saturday -- were intentionally set or accidental.

A hay bale caught fire on some land near Garber Friday evening and several bales ignited about 7:30 p.m. Saturday just northwest of 66th Street and Breckinridge Road. Enid firefighters used a pumper truck to extinguish Saturday's fire.

Hunters reported someone fleeing the area of Saturday's fire, said Garfield County Undersheriff Jerry Niles.

If the fires were intentionally set, Niles said investigators will assume they are related. Usually the same person or someone connected to the suspect is setting the fires, Niles said. Hay bale fires have occurred less often this summer than last year and Niles said he thinks last year's suspect may have been jailed on unrelated crimes in another county.
