The herd of beef cattle at Thomas Land and Cattle (marketed as TLC Grassfed Beef) is now certified Animal Welfare Approved by A Greener World.
This certification and food label lets consumers know these animals are raised outdoors on pasture or range in accordance with the highest animal welfare standards in the U.S. and Canada, using sustainable agriculture methods on an independent family farm, according to a news release from A Greener World.
Like other Animal Welfare Approved (AWA) farmers across the country, Mark and Annette Thomas recognize the growing consumer interest in how animals are raised on farms. Managing animals outdoors on pasture or range has known benefits for animals, consumers and the environment.
The Thomases currently manage a herd of 50 black Angus-based cow-calf pairs, which tolerate heat well and whose smaller frames are more efficient on pasture-based systems.
“Pasture-based systems are natural systems for cattle. They are how cattle evolved and enable cattle to thrive,” Annette Thomas said. “When managed well, pasture-based systems can produce nutrient-dense forages cattle can convert into high-quality beef, while promoting long-term plant and soil health.”
Although both Mark and Annette Thomas have agricultural backgrounds in other states, they are proud to be establishing a first-generation Oklahoma farm for their family.
“At the core of the vision for our farm is that we are a family farm operation where we are responsible for every aspect of its operation-from the high-level decisions to daily chores-and where our children have the opportunity to develop a lifelong passion for farming,” said Annette Thomas.
In summer 2017, AWA beef from TLC Grassfed Beef will be available at 1907 Meat Company in Stillwater, which currently offers AWA pork from Double R Farm.
