Cody McPherson, an Autry Technology Center student and Drummond High School graduate, recently became the first Autry student to serve as an officer on a national student organization.

McPherson is a welding student at Autry Tech and was elected to the National College/Post Secondary SkillsUSA officer team last week during the 2008 national conference where more than 15,000 students, teachers and business partners gathered.

SkillsUSA is a national non-profit student organization. National officer team members are responsible for planning and conducting leadership workshops and assisting with leadership and state conferences across the nation.

“I want to serve SkillsUSA and pay back what it has done for me,” said McPherson.

“During my years in SkillsUSA, I have been inspired to lead, but now I want to lead to inspire.”

McPherson said his goal as a national officer is to inspire SkillsUSA members across the nation to step out of their comfort zones and become leaders.

Before he was named to the national officer team, McPherson served as the Oklahoma vice president for SkillsUSA.

McPherson will travel to Virginia this month for officer training. There the officers will be appointed to specific offices and will train state officers.

Following his training in Virginia, McPherson will return to Oklahoma in time for the Career Tech Summer Conference, where he will serve as an auctioneer at the opening session of the trade and industrial education division.

The conference is set to begin Aug. 3.
