Focus: Native American week is set

Enid Intertribal Indian Club is hosting a week of American Indian activities for everyone to enjoy.

The first event, an American Indian crafts showcase, will be 2-3:30 p.m. Sunday at Leonardo’s Discovery Warehouse, 200 E. Maple. Activities will include finger weaving, basket weaving, dream catcher making, fringing, Indian dye making and Indian hand games.

At 4:30 p.m. Monday, Public Library of Enid and Garfield County will host a book reading of “How Great Thou Art.” The book will be read by Osage tribe member LeAnn Shiplet. The book is written by Linda Bolen, a Cherokee tribe member and Enid resident. In addition, the library will have a display of American Indian crafts.

On Tuesday, the club will hold its traditional “tasting party.” A large selection of American Indian foods will be available for the public to come taste.

On Nov. 10, the club will holds its Gourd Dance, when dancers from around the state gather in Enid. The dance will begin at 2 p.m., and an evening meal will be served at 6 p.m. Following the meal, the Grand Entry will lead the event, followed by the evening dance.

The Gourd Dance will be held at the Hoover Building, located at 305 E. Oxford.
