The 2007 Merrifield Office Plus Invitational baseball tournament was postponed Friday because of rain that swept through the area Thursday night.
Games scheduled to be played Friday will be played beginning at 11 a.m. today at Cimarron High School’s field in Lahoma, weather permitting.
David Allen Memorial Ballpark was too wet to play Friday morning, and barring substantial drying, which isn’t expected, the field will be unavailable today, as well, said ballpark superintendent Scott Pendleton.
“We’ve got standing water in some spots,” Pendleton said. “It doesn’t look like we’re going to get much sunshine (to dry out the field).”
Pendleton said the ballpark received 1.4 inches of rainfall overnight Thursday, and it likely will be a few days before the field is playable.
The partially completed first-round game between Drummond (4-10) and Pond Creek-Hunter (9-1) is slated to be completed as the first action today.
Pond Creek-Hunter leads the game 5-0 after 12⁄3 innings on a solo home run by Eric McCart in the first and two errors and two wild pitches by Drummond that plated four Panthers in the second.
The second round of the tournament is slated to begin immediately following that game, said tournament director and Pioneer head coach Dave Riesen.
The first two games of the second round will be consolation matchups — Oklahoma Bible Academy (5-2) vs. Garber (3-5), followed by Pioneer (5-4) vs. the Pond Creek-Hunter/Drummond loser. The nightcap will feature the tournament semifinals with Watonga facing the Pond Creek-Hunter/Drummond winner followed by Chisholm vs. top-seeded Cimarron (10-1).
If today’s second round is played, Riesen said the final day of the tournament will be played on an undetermined Wednesday in April at David Allen Memorial Ballpark.
