NORMAN, Okla. — The suspect of a police pursuit out of Oklahoma City suffered a gunshot wound to the head after the pursuit ended with a wreck in northwest Norman this afternoon, police reported.

Norman Police Capt. Tom Easley said the wreck occurred near 24th Avenue Northwest and Main Street after Oklahoma City police pursued a suspect vehicle. Eyewitnesses on the scene reported the suspect wrecked after he ran over a law enforcement spike strip.

When the suspect got out of the vehicle, he told police to back off or he was going to shoot himself, which he then did, witnesses said.

Easley said the suspect was possibly involved in a head-on collision with another uninvolved vehice during the pursuit. The suspect's car came to a rest near the Circle K at the 24th Avenue Northwest and Main Street intersection.

The suspect appeared to have died after shooting himself, but police have not yet confirmed his death.

Oklahoma City Police Department and Oklahoma Highway Patrol were involved in the pursuit.
