Oklahoma rep introduces homeschool tax deduction bill

From The Associated Press

OKLAHOMA CITY — Oklahoma Congressman Tom Cole has introduced legislation to allow homeschool families a tax deduction already available to elementary and secondary school teachers for certain expenses.

Under current law the tax deduction can go to homeschooling families only in states that consider them private schools. Cole introduced a bill Tuesday that would extend the deduction to every state.

Cole says homeschooling can cost thousands of dollars each year, though Oklahoma's Home Educators' Resource Education says the cost varies and can be very affordable.

There were about 1.5 million children being homeschooled in the United States in 2007, according to the latest data available from the National Center for Education Statistics.
