6-year-old boy killed in ATV accident near Sayre

SAYRE, Okla. — A 6-year-old boy from Sayre has died after he was pinned underneath an ATV.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol says Brody Jennings was killed Wednesday morning when the ATV he was riding on with two other boys rolled over, ejecting all three boys and pinning the 6 year old.

The patrol says Jennings was trapped for about 15 minutes before relatives freed him. He was transported by vehicle to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A 10-year-old boy driving the vehicle was not injured, while a 13-year-old passenger sustained a minor arm injury.

The boys were not wearing seatbelts.

Accident investigators have complained for decades that older tank cars, known as DOT-111s, are too easily punctured or ruptured, spilling their contents when derailed. Since 2008, there have been 10 significant derailments in the U.S. and Canada in which crude oil has spilled from ruptured tank cars, often igniting and resulting in huge fireballs. The worst was a runaway oil train that exploded in the Quebec town of Lac-Megantic a year ago, killing 47 people.
