ALTUS, Okla. — A 23-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the death of a 2-year-old child in Altus.
Jackson County authorities say Dustin Smades of Altus was arrested Monday in the death of Curtis Hoffman.
The child's death has been under investigation since April when officers responded to a report of a child not breathing. Smades was arrested on three counts of child abuse by injury. He was taken into custody at Altus Air Force Base after being discharged from the Air Force.
Investigators say statements by Smades contradicted evidence found at the crime scene. Each count is a felony and carries a life sentence if Smades is convicted.
Smades is being held at the county jail on a $300,000 bond. Online court records do not list an attorney for Smades.
