Oklahoma education board approves standard changes

From The Associated Press

OKLAHOMA CITY — Oklahoma State Board of Education has approved changes to its system of reviewing and changing state academic standards.

The proposal deletes the standards for history, math and other subjects from the department's list of its rules of operation that must be approved by the Legislature. The board says the removal doesn't mean the standards have been thrown out — but that it will mean legislative approval won't be needed for every adjustment to the academic requirements.

The changes would also create a voluntary committee to oversee the academic review process.

Some House members protested the proposal, saying the board is trying to work around the Legislature. The board says the changes are in line with Oklahoma law.

The proposals must be approved by the Legislature and Gov. Mary Fallin.
