OKLAHOMA CITY — An Oklahoma group that supports a set of education standards known Common Core is delivering a petition to state legislators signed by more than 7,000 Oklahomans who support the standards.
The Expect More OK! Coalition delivered the online petition to lawmakers Wednesday.
Common Core standards have been adopted in 45 states, including Oklahoma in 2010, and include basic requirements for students in math and English.
But there's growing opposition to the new standards, especially from some conservative lawmakers who claim the standards represent a federal takeover of public education.
Several bills have been introduced this session to repeal or delay the new standards, but the governor and Senate leaders have maintained their support for Common Core as a way to better prepare students for college or the workforce.
