Plainsmen netters show improvement at Union

TULSA —  —  Enid’s boys “improved dramatically’’ in scoring 22 points at the Union March tennis tournament Tuesday.

The Plainsmen only scored 12 points a few days before at Jenks.

Jason Christopherson, at No.2  singles, became the first Plainsman to win a match on the winners side. He ended up sixth after losing to No. 1 seed Alec Powers of Cascia Hall, 6-1, 6-2. He now is 5-3 overall.

Tyler Hallett and Koderick Miller, making their debut as a team, won the consolation championship at No. 2 doubles, beating Broken Arrow’s Howard and Arnold 6-4, 6-3 in the ninth-place match.

Connor Angleton and Blake Young won two matches to finish 13th at No. 2 doubles, raising their record to 3-5.

Zac Gwin was 14th at No. 1 singles.

The Plainsmen won all three of their split set matches and lost only one match, 6-0, 6-0.

“We’re making some big baby steps,’’ said Enid coach Darrell Herndon. “We made a lot of improvement. Jason really had a good day and it was good to see the No. 2 team come back like they did.

“Overall, it was a positive day. It was cold and windy, but we have been playing on Ninth Street (in Enid) long enough that it felt like being at home.

The boys go to Muskogee Saturday. The girls go to Muskogee Friday.

Correction

Madison Blevins and Savannah Blasi were third at No. 2 doubles at the girls Union Tournament and not fourth as previously reported.

His father introduced him to the game when he was small, putting a golf club in his hand when he was barely past the toddler stage.

He was touted as the next big thing and didn’t disappoint.
Now, at the tender age of 25, he is a multiple major champion.
