Chelf, Lee lead Pacers to 3rd-place trophy

ALTUS, Okla. —  Courtney Chelf (26) and Abby Lee (15) combined for 41 points as Enid’s girls beat Wichita Falls High School 56-25 in the third-place game of the Altus Lady Bulldog Classic on Saturday.

The Pacers (3-1) jumped out to a 24-6 first-quarter lead and never looked back in bouncing back from a semifinal loss to Lawton MacArthur on Friday.

“We just went back to work,’’ said Pacers coach Robb Mills. “The girls kept their heads up and they played really well today.’’

The Pacers were “a lot more focused’’ during a pre-game shootaround Saturday morning.

“I told them when you have a loss, it can either pull you together or pull you apart,’’ Mills said. “I have to give them credit for doing that. We have good solid leadership that you have to have to have a good season.’’

Mills said Chelf showed leadership the night before when she was a “big time cheerleader,’’ after going to the bench with foul trouble.

The Pacers were 22 of 26 from the foul line.

“Courtney and Abby were on today,’’ Mills said. “We have had a lot of balance in our scoring. We worked the ball real well and got a lot of layups and easy shots. You have a lot higher percentage shooting layups than outside shots.’’

Enid held Wichita Falls to only nine points in the first half.

“We just played solid defense,’’ Mills said. “We were sliding our feet instead of reaching out. If you don’t give them anything, they will eventually turn it over. You have to give the girls credit for adjusting their games.’’

Enid will host Lawton Eisenhower Friday at the Mabee Center.

His father introduced him to the game when he was small, putting a golf club in his hand when he was barely past the toddler stage.
He fell in love with it and worked hard, improving steadily. He became a terrific junior player and quickly improved.
He was touted as the next big thing and didn’t disappoint.
Now, at the tender age of 25, he is a multiple major champion.
Tiger Woods? Yes, once upon a tee time. But now those words are being spoken about Rory McIlroy.

  • Fowler happy with runner-up finish

For ex-Oklahoma State star Rickie Fowler, this is getting downright familiar.
    He’s not complaining.
For the second time this summer, Fowler played in the final group of a major championship, failed to overcome a big deficit, and settled for the runner-up spot.

The new-look Big 12 is ready for some football.
OK, the conference’s logo is what’s new this year. There are no changes in the makeup or format of the 10-team league, the only power conference with a round-robin schedule that determines a champion without an extra game.
