Grothe, Scott reach Kelley wrestling finals

TULSA, Okla. — Enid junior 126-pounder Billy Grothe and senior 220-pounder Jake Scott reached the finals of the Bishop Kelley wrestling tournament Friday.

Grothe won three matches, including one by a fall, to reach the finals against Tulsa East Central’s Mark Carter, who beat Grothe at the recent Coweta Tournament. Grothe has a team-high 21 wins.

Scott won two matches, both by falls, to reach the finals against East Central’s Josh Herman. The two have not wrestled this season. Scott has 15 wins this season.

“They both are going to have tough matches,’’ said EHS assistant coach Trent Holland. “If they wrestle well, they will have a good chance to win.’’

The Plainsmen still have five wrestlers alive in the consolations — 138-pounder Clay Jacks, 152-pounder Keegan Clayton, 160-pounder Hunter Nixon, 170-pounder Hank Schulz and 195-pounder Zack Overbeck. EHS had nine wins overall on the day, including six pins. Overbeck and Schulz had falls.

“We wrestled a lot better on our feet,’’ Holland said. “We had a lot more takedowns than we have been getting.’’

The tournament is Enid’s last competition before regionals Feb. 15-16. EHS lost a dual to Jenks, 54-18 Thursday night.

With a fifth Brickyard 400 victory on the line Sunday, Jeff Gordon looked like the driver he was 20 years ago.
Gordon nailed the final restart of the race — no given because restarts have been Gordon’s Achilles heel — to pass Hendrick Motorsports teammate Kasey Kahne with 17 laps remaining at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
