Jets split with Longview

ENID — Northern Oklahoma College Enid split a doubleheader Saturday against Longview (Mo.) Community College, taking the first game 14-4 before falling 5-4 in the nightcap at David Allen Memorial Ballpark.

The bats came to life for NOC Enid in the first game as the Jets pounded out 11 hits on their way to the 14-4 victory, recording their highest offensive output of the young season.

Shortstop Logan Bradley and outfielder J.R. Head led the Jets’ hit parade with two hits apiece as NOC Enid erupted for eight runs in the first three innings and never looked back.

Head, who also walked twice, and Tanner Cruts collected three RBI apiece. Cruts and catcher Tyler Watkins had the only extra base hits for the Jets, with a double each.

Jets starting pitcher Justin Sheets worked 62⁄3 innings, striking out two and giving up four hits and three earned runs to earn the victory. Travis Lance worked the final 1⁄3 inning for NOC Enid.

Longview scored all four of its runs in the fourth inning when catcher Austin Hill hit a grand slam home run. But the Lakers’ bats were silenced the rest of the game by Sheets as the Jets cruised to the win.

Lakers’ starting pitcher, freshman Lew Caradonna, lasted only 21⁄3 innnings and was tagged by the Jets for seven earned runs and six hits.

The Jets lost a heartbreaker in the second game when Longview broke a 4-4 tie in the top of the seventh inning to salvage a split in the twinbill.

In the nightcap, the Lakers took a page out of NOC Enid’s book from the first game, striking early with four runs in the first inning off Jets’ starter Jonathan Johnson who would survive a rocky start to pitch a complete game.

Lakers’ freshman shortstop Stephen Montisano went 4-for-4 in the contest and scored two runs, including the game-winning run in the top of the seventh when he was driven home on a sacrifice fly by Lucas Raper after reaching base on a double. Besides his seventh-inning double, Monsanto had three singles on the night and scored twice.

The Jets battled back to tie the game 4-4 after falling behind early as Johnson settled down and kept the Lakers off the scoreboard until the seventh inning. Johnson struck out six batters and allowed 11 hits and five earned runs.

NOC Enid’s offense was limited to six hits in the nightcap. Head, Chris Faulkner and Cruts each doubled in the contest while Cruts, Bradley and Blake Callaway had RBI in the losing effort.

The Jets threatened in the bottom of the seventh, putting two runners on base, but Lakers’ reliever Ryan Spry closed the door on the potential winning rally, securing the victory for starter Chase Hodson who went six innings while striking out five.

The two schools will close out their three-game series today with a scheduled nine-inning single game at 1 p.m. at David Allen Memorial Ballpark.

Garrett Kelly, who was the winning pitcher in the Jets’ 6-1 victory Tuesday over Cloud, is expected to start for the Jets who now are 5-5 this season.
