Opportunistic Majors down Rogers

BARTLESVILLE, Okla. — The Enid Majors were able to make the most of their five hits in a 6-4 win over Rogers, Ark., at the Glen Winget Invitational baseball tournament Friday.

The Majors (26-11) can assure themselves a berth in Sunday’s championship round with a win over Fort Smith, Ark., at 9 tonight.

The win over Rogers was a rematch of last year’s Winget Invitational.

Enid overcame a 4-0 deficit by scoring a run in the third, three in the fourth and two in the fifth.

Cody Daylor threw two perfect innings of relief after coming in with runners on first and second in the sixth. He induced a double play from the next batter and got the next batter to ground out.

He struck out two of the three batters he faced in the seventh.

“He was just dominating,’’ said Majors assistant coach Butch Lingenfelter.

Enid played errorless defense behind Gamez and Daylor and left only four runners on base.

“We played a really good game,’’ Lingenfelter said. “We were able to take advantage of our opportunities. We got the clutch hits and ground outs.’’

Both of Rogers’ errors led to Enid runs.

Nate Williams reached on an error in the third and scored the Majors’ first run after a walk to Brandon Rakestraw, a passed ball and a sacrifice fly by Silvano Tarango.

Enid tied the game with three runs in the fourth. Junior Obeso was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored when Weston Ward reached on an error. Williams singled in Ward. He stole second and scored on a single by Rakestraw.

Garron Nixon and Obeso walked in the fifth. Nixon scored on a ground out by Cole Floyd and Obeso came home on Ward’s sac fly, his second RBI of the game.

“We made them pay for their mistakes,’’ Lingenfelter said.

Rogers scored twice in the second and third.

Gamez, the winning pitcher, raised his record to 5-2 overall. He allowed seven hits, while striking out three and walking two.

“Once he settled down, he threw pretty well,’’ Lingenfelter said.
