Teffts show versatility

ENID, Okla. — Kyle Tefft is recognized as the best overall athlete in the history of Chisholm High School with letters in cross country, basketball and golf.

Not to mention being a nationally-ranked junior tennis player. He played both basketball and tennis at Oklahoma Christian University.

At 28, Tefft still has it.

Sunday morning, he played the second round of the Oakwood Country Club club championship, finishing second in the junior division to Walker Henson.

Sunday afternoon, he won two matches in helping Oakwood Country Club beat the Enid Tennis Association 10-8 in the Larry McClure Cup matches at Crosslin Park.

“Apparently I’m better at tennis than I am at golf,’’ Tefft said. “Golf could have been better, but it always could be worse. It’s nice to be able to play both golf and tennis. There’s not too much physical assertion in golf.’’

He teamed with former Enid All-Stater Molly Player to beat Steve Wagner and Jan Hill 6-3, 6-3 in mixed doubles and with his father, Scott, to beat Matt Lopez and Richard Perry 6-3, 6-2 in men’s doubles.

“I was struggling by the end of the day,’’ said the younger Tefft. “I was exhausted. Fortunately I was playing doubles, and not singles, and I didn’t have to move that much.’’

The Teffts were able to win the “important points’’ in beating Perry and Lopez, two of the more decorated players in Enid tennis annuals.

“It was a good match,’’ Kyle Tefft said. “We served well and played well. It was fun playing Matt and Richard.’’

Kyle Tefft had never played with Player before, but the two had good chemistry.

“I had a good partner,’’ Player said.

“Molly played well,’’ Kyle Tefft said. “We partner well and had fun.’’

Tefft, a financial advisor, smiled when asked if he kept i good physical shape.

“I feel that way some days and some days I don’t,’’ he said. “I definitely will feel sore tomorrow. I’m going to be chasing my little one (daughter Nora, 14 months) so I know I will be sore.’’

Tefft got his versatility through heredity.

His dad, too, played in the Oakwood Club championship Sunday, shooting an 83.

“I carried Kyle a little bit, but we finally got it done,’’ said Scott Tefft with a laugh. “As long as I play with Kyle, all I have to do is to show up. If I don’t get in the way too much, we usually win.’’

The Teffts haven’t dropped a set in the series between Oakwood and the ETA.

“I’m feeling good,’’ Scott Tefft said. “I love to play both, especially when I get to play with one of my kids. Kyle is an different league than most of us.’’

He calls his 83 on the golf course “just average.’’

Player and Peggy Harris were the only Oakwood winners in the four women’s doubles but the OCC had five other winners in mixed doubles — Mark Feightner-Melann Reid, Dave Callant-Becky Reilly, Jens Ruding-Carolyn Nicholas, John Thomas-Rose Thomas and Blake Thomas-Amy Parrish. Oakwood won two other men’s doubles matches — Feightner and Kevin Curttright and Jarrod Lack and Dan Smith.

ETA women’s doubles winners were  Jan Hill-Jennilee Hockmeyer, Kim Logan-Rebecca Harper and Carol Broughton-Traci Fuksa. Mixed doubles winners were Evyn Helber-Broughton and Dale Kosted-Kim Moore. Men’s doubles winners were Rick Hockmeyer-Steve Wagner, Dan Fiegel and Brian Engle and David Bloss-Bruce Hess.
