Pacers earn softball honors

ENID, Okla. — Enid senior second baseman Abby Lee and sophomore pitcher Ally Lewis were selected to the All District 6A-4 softball team announced Wednesday.

Outfielder-shortstop Haven Bay and outfielder Shelley Mueller were honorable mention selections.

Lee, who hit .402 with 14 doubles, also was an all-region selection. Mueller was selected as a utility player.

“No one disputed her as the top second baseman in the district,’’ said Enid head coach Marsha Cusack.

“She was one of the top players in 6A. She came up huge for us.”

Lewis was selected as a utility player for the all-district team. She hit .415 with a school record 15 doubles. Lewis had 35 RBI, one of the three highest in school history.

The Pacers had 11 players earn National Fastpitch Coaches Association Aca-demic All-American scholar honors — Lee, Mueller, Ashton King, Hannah Nicholas, McKayla Herbst, Bay, Olivia Andrews, Brooke Sears, Mary Lou Alonzo, Erin Felber and Serena Davis.

To be eligible for the honor, a player needed a grade point average over 3.5.

The Pacers won an academic excellence award from the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association for having a team GPA of 3.69. Eight Pacers had 4.0 grade averages.

“I’m proud of them,’’ Cusack said. “They take a lot of pride in their academics. They know in order to be a 6A athlete, you’ve got to balance academics, home life, church and family, which sometimes can be a struggle. They live up to the expectations they are students first.’

His father introduced him to the game when he was small, putting a golf club in his hand when he was barely past the toddler stage.
He fell in love with it and worked hard, improving steadily. He became a terrific junior player and quickly improved.
He was touted as the next big thing and didn’t disappoint.
Now, at the tender age of 25, he is a multiple major champion.
Tiger Woods? Yes, once upon a tee time. But now those words are being spoken about Rory McIlroy.

  • Fowler happy with runner-up finish

For ex-Oklahoma State star Rickie Fowler, this is getting downright familiar.
    He’s not complaining.
For the second time this summer, Fowler played in the final group of a major championship, failed to overcome a big deficit, and settled for the runner-up spot.
