EHS wrestlers host Wildcats in dual

ENID, Okla. — Enid’s wrestlers go into their opening dual with Ponca City at 7 tonight at Waller Middle School with some optimism.

The Wildcats graduated four state qualifiers from a team that beat the Plainsmen 54-18 last season. EHS forfeited several matches.

“This could be a pretty even matchup,’’ said Plainsmen coach Corey Clayton. “We’re still struggling to get people in the right weight class and we still have some academic issues.’’

Because some wrestlers haven’t been certified yet to compete at the weight they will be going at, Clayton said it won’t be a measuring stick for the team.

“This will be a chance for individuals to see where they’re at this early,’’ Clayton said. “Obviously, every time you step on the mat, you gain something. You see what’s working and what’s not working. We still have some holes in the lineup, but we’re a little more full than last year.’’

EHS will go void at 106. The rest of the lineup will have Kenau Quinn at 113, Austin Loza at 120, Tyler Reese at 126, Billy Grothe at 132, Troy Gray at 138, Johnny Glasgow at 145, John Choi at 152, Keegan Clayton at 160, Issac Barron at 170, Andy Reyes at 182, Caleb Harris at 195, Zach Overbeck at 220 and Mason Dillard at heavyweight.

The Wildcats have a new coach in Jason Leavitt, a former state champion for Ponca City.

“They have a great tradition and history,’’ Clayton said.

Tonight is also Military Appreciation Night. Any service person with an ID will be admitted free. There will be a drop-off for Toys for Tots.

The junior varsity high school and junior high dual will start at 6. The junior high and high school duals will be at the same time.

The Plainsmen are hosting the Mid-America Nationals Friday and Saturday at the Enid Event Center.

There will be both morning-afternoon and evening sessions both days.
