Lofton to make 400 debut at Bethany

ENID, Okla. — State runnerup Alex Lofton will be running the 400 meters for the first time this season when the Enid track teams go to the Bethany Invitational today.

Lofton had been sidelined by a recent hand operation. He’ll team with  Raheem Mitchell, Bryan Harger and either Marshawn Mills or Chris Daniels in the 1,600 relay.

It’s Enid’s first meet since March 13. EHS had around 15 to 20 athletes come out for “relaxed’’ spring break practices last week.

“Those people got a lot more benefit out of it than those who sat around and did nothing,’’ said Enid coach Joe Miranov. “We had some really good practices this week. We might be a little sore going into this meet.’’

The Plainsmen are ranked No. 8 in the 400-meter relay with Mitchell, Daniels, Mills and Harger, who had a time of 43.54 in winning the event at the McGuinness Invitational.

Daniels may try the high jump.

Miranov said the Pacers may have some changes in the short relays. There were a couple of dropped handoffs at McGuinness.

“We have some young kids there,’’ Miranov said. “We have quite a few meets before regionals to get that down.’’

Junior Macy Adams will be going for her second straight win in the high jump.

For the first time this season, the Plainsmen and Pacers will take both a varsity and JV team to a meet.

With a fifth Brickyard 400 victory on the line Sunday, Jeff Gordon looked like the driver he was 20 years ago.
Gordon nailed the final restart of the race — no given because restarts have been Gordon’s Achilles heel — to pass Hendrick Motorsports teammate Kasey Kahne with 17 laps remaining at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
