Plainsmen netters go for state berths

ENID, Okla. — Today’s regional boys tennis tournament at Edmond’s Kickingbird Golf Club shows the affect Daniel Martinez’s injury (hip flexor surgery) had on the Plainsmen.

With Martinez playing No. 1 singles (where he was third in the state tournament), the Plainsmen qualified for state in all four divisions last year.

With Martinez being out and everyone moving up a level, the Plainsmen’s goal is to try to qualify in at least one or two divisions for the state tournament which begins Friday at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center.

The top four finishers in each division qualify forstate.

“We just want to find an obtainable goal,’’ said Enid coach Darrell Herndon. “We have changed our lineup three or four times trying to find the combination that will give us the best chance to qualify in one or two divisions.

“We don’t have a lot of ammunition to take into the seeding meetings. We’ll take our chances in the draw. We’ll play hard and hope for the best.’’

The good thing, Herndon said, is the tournament is double elimination. A first-round loss would pit the EHS player against another first-round loser.

Win that one and they’re playing for third and fourth and the berth in the state tournament.

“If we get someone qualify, everybody is going to go,’’ Herndon said. “We want everybody to experience the state tournament.’’

EHS will go with a lineup of Zach Gwin (6-14), No. 1 singles; Koderick Miller (5-14), No. 2 singles; Jason Christopherson and Connor Angleton (4-4), No. 1 doubles; and Tyler Hallett and Blake Young (1-3), No. 2 doubles.

Edmond North and McGuinness head the eight-team field. Edmond Santa Fe, Midwest City, Mustang, Putnam City and Putnam City West complete the field.

Edmond North and McGuinness are the class of the field. Santa Fe is “probably a little better than we are,’’ Herndon said.

Herndon said EHS, though, should be competitive with the rest of the field.

“Daniel will be back next year,’’ Herndon said. “I think playing up a level has helped the guys. I feel good about next season.’’

OBA and Chisholm will be going east for 4A Regionals.

OBA will be going to LaFortune Park in Tulsa where it will be pitted with Ada, Miami, Midway, Okmulgee, Oologah, Pawhuska, Rejoice Christian, Seminole, Tulsa Central,Victory Christian amd Wagoner.

The Longhorns will be going to the regional at  the Grand Racquet Club. CHS is pitted with  Beggs,

Bristow, Cleveland, Henryetta, Hominy, Nowata,  Poteau, Riverfield Country Day, Sallisaw, and Sperry.
