Newton, Allen to be honored at banquet

ENID, Okla. — Kingfisher’s Grant Newton and Laverne head football coach Tim Allen will be honored June 6 at the 29th annual National Football Foundation awards in Oklahoma City.

Newton is one of only 10 high school athletes statewide to be named a National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete Award winner. He will receive a $1,500 academic scholarship.

Newton was the quarterback of the Kingfisher Yellowjackets’ run to the Class 3A state championship game this past season. He passed for 1,596 yards and 14 touchdowns and rushed for another 1,144 yards in 2012. Newton led Kingfisher to a 14-1 record, with their only loss coming in the championship game, 28-21 to Blanchard.

The Kingfisher senior was named to the Enid News & Eagle All-Northwest football team at the conclusion of the 2012 season and also was named to the 3A All-Star team in addition to earning Academic All-State honors.

Allen is one of two state recipients of the National Football Foundation Coaching Award. Blanchard head coach Jeff Craig is the other recipient.

Allen led Laverne to an undefeated 14-0 season as the Tigers claimed the school’s first-ever state title, defeating Pond Creek-Hunter 50-19 for the Class B crown in December.

He also was named the Enid News & Eagle’s 8-man Coach of the Year for the 2012 season.

It was the second-straight year Allen, who has been the head coach at Laverne for the past 15 years, won the award in voting by his fellow coaches.
