Pioneer tries to end with upset for first district win

WAUKOMIS, Okla. — In the final week of what has been a challenging season for Pioneer, the Mustangs face what could be the team’s most challenging matchup yet at 7:30 p.m., when they travel to No. 8 Minco in the Mustangs’ last chance to notch a district victory in 2013.

Pioneer (1-8, 0-5) came within a point of its first district win last week in a 13-12 loss to Crossings Christian, the Mustangs’ fifth straight loss and closest defeat of the season.

It was the latest chapter in what has been a season-long scoring struggle for the Mustangs, whose 13.5 points a game is an A-3 low.

All eight of Minco’s wins followed a season-opening loss to 2A Dibble, and none have been particularly close. Aside from a 49-33 defeat of Crossings Christian on Oct. 25, Minco (8-1, 5-0) hasn’t given up more than 12 points during the streak, and even with the shootout against Crossings, has held opponents to 8.4 points per game along the way, scoring 42.8 per contest in the process.

But of the two teams, only Pioneer has something to gain in its regular-season finale.

With a 41-12 head-to-head win against A-3 second-place Cashion, Minco already has locked in a district title and top seed. Meanwhile, a win for Pioneer would be the first for the Mustangs against Minco in the teams’ three-game history against one another, would keep Pioneer from finishing winless in district play, and would be a cherry on top of the Mustangs’ time in 11-man football, a tenure set to at least go on hiatus after the school’s petition to drop to Class B 8-man football in 2014 was granted.

His father introduced him to the game when he was small, putting a golf club in his hand when he was barely past the toddler stage.
He fell in love with it and worked hard, improving steadily. He became a terrific junior player and quickly improved.
He was touted as the next big thing and didn’t disappoint.
Now, at the tender age of 25, he is a multiple major champion.
Tiger Woods? Yes, once upon a tee time. But now those words are being spoken about Rory McIlroy.

  • Fowler happy with runner-up finish

For ex-Oklahoma State star Rickie Fowler, this is getting downright familiar.
    He’s not complaining.
For the second time this summer, Fowler played in the final group of a major championship, failed to overcome a big deficit, and settled for the runner-up spot.

The new-look Big 12 is ready for some football.
OK, the conference’s logo is what’s new this year. There are no changes in the makeup or format of the 10-team league, the only power conference with a round-robin schedule that determines a champion without an extra game.
