Mustangs keep district hopes alive

ENID, Okla. — A 1-4 start isn’t the best kind of start, but an 0-1 start in district play isn’t the end of the world.

Even better would be 1-1.

Those are the stakes for Pioneer football 7:30 tonight against a visiting Watonga team in the Mustangs’ second chance at a District A-3 win in 2013.

For now, that, not the 1-4 start, is the focus for coach Kurt Myers. Ditto his players, he hopes.

“That’s exactly how we’re looking at it,” Myers said. “We’re still pumping home that we’re capable of making the playoffs, and we want to play our best ball. We’ve had great practices. It’s been really upbeat.”

Watonga (3-2, 1-1) won the teams’ only previous matchup, beating Pioneer 49-14 last season.

Watonga has scored 169 points this season — second only to Crescent’s 185 in A-3 — to Pioneer’s 68, and has allowed 146 to the Mustangs’ 165. But Pioneer’s best game of the season came against the teams’ only shared opponent.

Pioneer beat Snyder 42-26 in Snyder on Sept. 27. Watonga won its game against a visiting Snyder, 38-14.

Kickoff: 7:30 p.m.

Records: Watonga (3-2, 1-1), Pioneer (1-4, 1-1)

Series: Watonga leads, 1-0

Last: Watonga 49, Pioneer 14,
