EHS boys 6th at Ada

ADA, Okla. —  Daniel Martinez was third at No. 1 singles to lead the Plainsmen to a sixth-place finish at the Ada boys tennis tournament Saturday.

Martinez lost to No. 1 seed David Hager of Edmond North, 6-3, 6-2 and won his third-place match over Brad Gleason of Union by injury default. Gleason had beaten Martinez four times this season.

“Daniel played well,’’ said Enid coach Darrell Herndon. “I don’t think he was disappointed he didn’t play Gleason. He was a little tired. This was a tough tournament.’’

Martinez is now 16-7 for the season.

Zach Gwin lost his first-round match in three sets at No. 2 singles, but came back to win the next three, including a 6-3, 6-0 deicision over Hayden Pettigrew in the consolation finals. He lost only seven games in his three wins.

“Zach played well,’’ Herndon said.

He is now 15-8 overall.

Ryan Leap and Connor Angleton were 11th at No. 1 doubles, beating an Ardmore team 6-2, 6-4 in the 11th-place match. They were 2-2 on the day to raise their record to 11-14.

Tyler Hallett and Kendrick Miller were 14th at No. 2 doubles. They lost their first- round match to an Edmond North team in three sets. They were 1-3 on the day to set their overall record at 4-7.

“The No. 1 doubles team is showing improvement,’’ Herndon said. “The No. 2 team needs to get over the hump. That was a tough first-round loss.’’

Jenks won the 16-team tournament, followed by Edmond North, Edmond Memorial, Tulsa Union, Byng and Enid.

EHS will go to Broken Arrow Tuesday.
