NJCAA Division II World Series opens in Enid

ENID, Okla. — It’s that time of year again. For the fifth-straight year, Enid will serve as the host city for the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II World Series with 10 district championship baseball teams from around the nation converging on David Allen Memorial Ballpark. The World Series runs through June 1.

Tonight’s opening night festivities start at 5 p.m. at David Allen and will feature hamburgers on the grill, an introduction of all the teams, a “coaches challenge” hitting competition and free tournament posters that young fans can use to get autographs from the participating teams’ players. Enid mayor Bill Shewey will be on hand to toss out the ceremonial first pitch.

The games begin Saturday at 9 a.m. when defending champion LSU-Eunice (48-8), ranked No. 1 and riding a 12-game winning streak, will open its title defense against No. 8 Lackawanna (Pa.).

Oklahoma is represented in the series by Tishomingo’s Murray State College. The No. 7 Aggies (41-21), Plains District champions, are making their first-ever World Series appearance and will open play 4 p.m. Saturday against Brunswick (N.C.) Community College.

Seven teams are making return trips to the Series, with three newcomers (Murray State, Brunswick, North Iowa) joining the party. Three of the seven returning teams account for 12 previous World Series titles with Grand Rapids (Mich.) Community College leading the way with five titles, followed by LSU-Eunice with four and Madison (Wis.) College with three. The other returning contenders are Heartland (Ill.) Community College, UConn-Avery Point, Lackawana and Scottsdale (Ariz.) Community College.

All games will be broadcast live on KCRC (1390 AM) and a live video stream will be available at
