Cagle, Keiser look to defend Senior 4-ball title

ENID, Okla. — Enid’s Dave Cagle and Bob Keiser will be trying to defend their Oklahoma Senior Golf Association Fourball title, which begins a two-day run at Oakwood Country Club today.

The 57 teams in five flights will have a 10 a.m. shotgun start today and a 9 a.m. shotgun start Tuesday.

Cagle and Keiser won the event with a five-under par 137 a year ago after shooting a 66 on the final day.

They will be joined in A flight by three other local teams — Mark Stevenson and Jim Lack, John Donaldson and Craig Collins and Paul Thomas and Tim Zaloudek.

Collins was second with Rod Billings at 138 last year. Lack was third with Don Hennigh at 140.

“I think every Enid team has a chance to win their flight,’’ said Oakwood assistant pro Logan Vest. “They are familiar with the course which helps a lot.’’

Edmond’s Jim Wetzel and Bob Sine, who were fourth a year ago, are another team to watch. They have the lowest combined handicap.

Vest estimates a score of anywhere from six-under (136) to eight-under (144) should win the tournament. Players can be more aggressive in the fourball format, Vest said.

“The course is playing pretty tough right now,’’ Vest said. “Now that it’s wet, it’s playing pretty long. If anyone is close to six-under, they should win it, no questions asked.’’

The recent rains, which have hit northwest Oklahoma ,were welcomed by the Oakwood staff.

“It’s like night and day compared to where it was before,’’ Vest said. “The golf course as good as it’s been in the seven years since I’ve been here for this time of year. It doesn’t get any greener in July. It’s incredible.’’

Other local teams are Steve Ward and Ron McKeaigg, B; Bill Weber and Paul Baker, C; Jim Fournier and Tim Winfield, C; Grover Wade and Bill Kannegiesser, C; Chuck Murrie and Stan Harris, D; Jack McGee and Jim Pearce, E; Larry Wheeler and John Parton, E; Joe Chandler and Don Clark, E; and Wayne Holder and Ron Hoskins, E.

Hoskins and Holder are the defending E flight champs.

Luke Wakamatsu has heard the question before.
The shortstop for DBAT Gallegos, the thus-far still unblemished frontrunner in the Connie Mack South Plains Regional, doesn’t exactly have a common last name. And his dad doesn’t exactly have a common resume, either.
