Rainout fine with Minors

ENID, Okla. — Enid Minors coach Seth Sturgeon welcomed Sunday’s rains that washed out games with the Bethany Bulls (Sunday) and the Oklahoma City Drillers (today).

“To be honest with you, my team needed a break,’’ Sturgeon said. “We had played nine games in the last five days and they were all on the road.’’

The Minors had gone to Oklahoma City Monday, Woodward Tuesday, Lawton Wednesday, Norman Thursday and swept a doubleheader at Chisholm Friday (13-0 and 14-8).

“We’re a little tired,’’ Sturgeon said. “We didn’t get back until about 2:30 a.m. some of those nights.’’

The Minors, 20-28, will practice today and Wednesday and take Tuesday off in anticipation of the state Connie Mack Tournament, which begins Thursday at David Allen Memorial Ballpark.

Enid, the No. 3 seed, will be playing the Woodward Majors at 2:30 p.m. Thursday in the first round. The Minors were assured the No. 3 seed when the OKC Drillers split with the Enid Majors Saturday.

The Minors are 5-3 over their last eight games.

“We have been playing the way I want to play the last four to five days,’’ Sturgeon said. “We’re playing the best baseball we can play going into the state tournament. I’m pleased with it.’’
