Trojans ease into long football season

ENID, Okla. — Oklahoma Bible Academy doesn’t follow the norm of taking advantage of 10 spring football practice days (with full pads) allowed by Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association.

Instead, the Trojans concentrated primarily on lifting, some agility drills and seven-on-seven drills.

One reason was OBA coach Mark Boyd wanted to give his players — many of whom participate in three sports — some rest before the Trojans start their off-season program June 3.

Another reason was the Trojans lacked numbers with the upcoming sophomore (2013-14) class in Houston on another school function. Preston Atwood, one of OBA’s quarterbacks, was involved with student council.

“We didn’t have enough numbers to even do seven-on-seven,’’ Boyd said. “That’s why we didn’t do it. Most of our kids do three sports. It doesn’t hurt them to have a week or two off. I hope it doesn’t hurt us.’’

The Trojans will lift Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays during the summer and will be participating in a 7-on-7 passing league at Chisholm.

“Even if we don’t pass that much, it gives us a chance to work on defense, that’s good for sure,’’ Boyd said. “That’s what we use for spring practice.’’

Coaches are allowed to supervise weight training and running, but can’t give any on-field instruction, Boyd said. They are allowed to do so in 7-on-7 leagues.

OBA will not go to a team camp, but several players plan to go to camps in Tulsa, Arkansas and Texas among other places. Baylor Boyd, Mark Boyd’s son and a multiple-position player for the Trojans, will be going to two or three camps himself.

“We have them all over the place,’’ coach Boyd said. “We have some kids playing baseball in the summer and our summer basketball schedule is unbelievably busy, but we have some kids who do take advantage of the camps.’’

Baylor Boyd and Atwood split quarterback duties a year ago. The other would be playing wide receiver or running back.

Coach Boyd still plans to use that system “unless one emerges as the clear-cut guy.’’

“They both have been doing a good job,’’ he said. “We’ll keep doing what we have been doing.’’

The Trojans, coach Boyd said, make up for any lost time by still having two-a-days in the preseason.

“We will have plenty of time to practice when the fall rolls around,’’ he said. “We’ve got to utilize the time in the fall.’’
