Sports briefs for 5-05-13

ENID, Okla. — Registration open for

H.E.S. track meet

Registration is open for the 6th annual H.E.S. Sports Club Hershey’s Track and Field Games. The meet will be held at Enid High School track on June 1. Check-in starts at 9 a.m., with events beginning at 10 a.m.

The meet is designed to encourage athletes to participate in track and field and is open to athletes ages 7-14. The top two qualifiers in each event advance to the state meet in Norman on the University of Oklahoma campus. Participants ages 7-8 can advance to the state meet this year in the 50 meters, 100 meters, standing long jump and softball throw.

There is no cost to participate. For information and to register, go to www.hessportsclub .com. Registration deadline is May 24.

featured on Express

Northwest Oklahoma will have a prominent position on tonight’s Oklahoma High School Sports Express at 10:30 on KOKH (Channel 8, KOKH).

Highlights from the girls state tennis tournament will be shown as well as games from the state slow-pitch tournaments — 4A Chisholm vs. Chandler, 3A Depew vs. Mooreland and 2A Pond Creek-Hunter vs. Soper.

Highlights from the Dover-Asher first-round Class B baseball game and the girls Class 2A state golf tournament will be shown as well.

Timberlake golf tourney

set for May 18

The eighth-annual Timberlake Golf Tournament is May 18 at Pheasant Run Golf Club.

There will be a 1 p.m. shotgun start, preceded by lunch at noon.

Cost for the four-person scramble is $200 per team or $50 for an individual. There will be prizes for the longest drive and the closest to the pin. There will be door prizes for everyone.

All proceeds go to the Timberlake football program.

    DBAT Gallegos, who has been battling adversity all season (lost five players through injuries) took advantage of their opportunities in beating Metroplex rival Dallas Mustangs, 3-0 Sunday in the finals of the Connie South Plains Regional.
    The victory put the DBAT (34-7) into the Connie Mack World Series, which begins Friday at Farmington, N.M.

  • Meadowlake retains Enid Ryder Cup

    Jay Betchan might have a statement a week before he tries to defend his Wheat Capital championship next week.
    Betchan completed a perfect 3-0 record for Meadowlake with a 6-and-4 win over John Petersen as the Municipal Course took the Enid Ryder Cup for the fourth straight year, 131⁄2-101⁄2 overall.
    The two teams split six singles matches Sunday at Oakwood in the final day of the three-day competition.

    Frank Thomas choked back tears, Joe Torre apologized for leaving people out of his speech and Tony La Russa said he felt uneasy.
    Being enshrined in the Hall of Fame can have those effects, even on the greats.
    Thomas, pitchers Tom Glavine and Greg Maddux, and managers Bobby Cox, Torre and La Russa were inducted into the baseball shrine Sunday, and all paid special tribute to their families before an adoring crowd of nearly 50,000.

     With a fifth Brickyard 400 victory on the line Sunday, Jeff Gordon looked like the driver he was 20 years ago.
    Gordon nailed the final restart of the race — no given because restarts have been Gordon’s Achilles heel — to pass Hendrick Motorsports teammate Kasey Kahne with 17 laps remaining at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
