Trojans win 2A regional

WATONGA, Okla. — Oklahoma Bible Academy’s boys won the 1,600-meter relay to capture the team championship at the Class 2A regional track meet Saturday.

Manny Walker, Johnny Volpe, Merritt Suenram and Blaine Whitson had a time of 3:30.5 to win the final event for the Trojans, who had 139 points.

Chris Walker joined Volpe, Suenram and Whitson to win the 3,200 relay in 8:45.

Whitson swept the 1,600 (4:52) and 3,200 (10:47). Walker took the 200 (22.95) and 400 (51.0). Volpe was the 800 champion in 2:06.

“It’s pretty cool what Blaine did (four golds),’’ Ford said.

Suenram was second in the 1,600 (4:53) and 400 (51.9). Manny Walker was fourth in the 400 (53.4).

“It felt great,’’ said OBA coach Alan Ford. “It was a very tight race (with Fairview) at the end.’’

The OBA girls had three winners in taking second.

Ashley Atwood won the 400 meters in 1:00.5 and teamed with Regan Moss, Savannah Atwood and Erin Coffin to take the 1,600 relay in 4:14 and with McKayla Kuykendall, Brooklyn Wiens and Coffin to win the 400 relay in 51.7.

Kuykendall, Atwood, Moss and Coffin were second in the 800 relay in 1:52.6.

    DBAT Gallegos, who has been battling adversity all season (lost five players through injuries) took advantage of their opportunities in beating Metroplex rival Dallas Mustangs, 3-0 Sunday in the finals of the Connie South Plains Regional.
    The victory put the DBAT (34-7) into the Connie Mack World Series, which begins Friday at Farmington, N.M.

  • Meadowlake retains Enid Ryder Cup

    Jay Betchan might have a statement a week before he tries to defend his Wheat Capital championship next week.
    Betchan completed a perfect 3-0 record for Meadowlake with a 6-and-4 win over John Petersen as the Municipal Course took the Enid Ryder Cup for the fourth straight year, 131⁄2-101⁄2 overall.
    The two teams split six singles matches Sunday at Oakwood in the final day of the three-day competition.
