Hitting not enough for Jets in loss to Bears

ENID, Okla. — Freshman Korbin Polston gave Northern Oklahoma College Enid Jets baseball fans something to cheer about in a 13-7 loss No. 5-ranked Des Moines (Iowa) Area Community College Sunday at David Allen Memorial Ballpark.

The Carl Albert freshman was 3-for-3 with a double and two singles to go with three RBI and two runs scored. He was 5-for-7 in the three-game series with six RBI, including a home run.

He was in the middle of an effective 3-4-5 batting order for the Jets. Chase Knott, Polston and Sammy Terry went 6-for-11 with seven RBI and three runs scored.

Lead-off hitter Haden Johnson was the benefactor of the middle of the order’s hot bats. He scored three runs after reaching base in four of his five at-bats with a single and two walks.

“We hit the ball well,’’ said Jets coach Raydon Leaton. “That was the only phase of the game that we did well.’’

The bad news was the Jets pitchers allowed 15 hits, seven walks, four wild pitches and hit a batter.

The defense committed five errors, including several overthrows which resembled the Bad News Bears. The Bears stole seven bases.

“We gave up too many free bases,’’ Leaton said as his team lost its eighth straight game to drop to 1-8 for the season. “We need to get back to the basics and day one. We need to do the little things right to win games.’’

Polston drove in runs with a sac fly in the first, a double in the fifth and a single in the seventh of the nine-inning game.

“He’s going to be a good player for us,’’ Leaton said. “He’s doing good things for us.’’

“I’m beginning to get the feel of things,’’ Polston said. “It (jump from 5A to junior college) hasn’t been too bad. I faced 5A pitchers. They are pretty similiar to the ones I’ve faced here.’’

Terry was 2-for-4 with a Texas League single, scoring Knott and Polston with two out in the third and a single in the fifith to score Polston. Knott doubled in Johnson in the first.

“We were able to get people in when we had people in scoring position,’’ Leaton said. “We had a chance to do some things, but ...’’

While the top of the order swung big bats, the bottom of the order combined to go 0-for-12 with three strikeouts.

The Bears’ Edwin Medina, who went 5-for-5 with the game-winning homer in a 6-4 win over the Jets Saturday, continued to wear out NOC Enid pitching.

He was 3-for-4 and reached base in five of his six at-bats with two walks. He scored twice and stole three bases. Medina helped ignite a four-run outburst in the fourth to make it 10-4 when he got out of a rundown on an error.

Only one starter  failed to either have a hit or scored a run as the Bears scored in every inning but the fifth and the eighth. They had four in the fourth, two in the first, third and ninth innings and one each in the second, sixth and seventh.

Charlie Coghlin was 4-for-5 with a double, three singles, three RBI and two runs scored. Dalton Lueschke had three singles and two RBI. Steve Serratore had a double and a single and two RBI and scored twice. Blake Molitor had an RBI single and scored twice.

Christian Lafontan took the loss for the Jets, allowing five hits, six runs, four earned runs and three walks while striking out five.

“I just think as a team, we need to cut down on our errors and come together as a team,’’ Polston said.

The Jets will be back in action at 1 p.m. Tuesday when they host Butler County (Kan.) in a single nine-inning game.
