Pacers eliminated at softball regional

JENKS, Okla.– — JENKS — The fastpitch softball season came to a disappointing end Wednesday for the Enid Pacers (16-22) in a Class 6A regional with a 15-7 loss to Ponca City and a 2-1 defeat to Bartlesville.

Ponca City took advantage of 16 Enid walks and three costly errors to down the Pacers in the opener.

Enid senior Courtney Chelf broke her own Enid home run record, connecting for her 14th round-tripper on the season. Chelf also set the Enid single season record for RBI with 56.

The Pacers stranded 20 runners in the 15-7 loss. It didn’t get any better in the Bartlesville defeat as the Pacers left 20 more runners on base.

Against Bartlesville, pitcher Ally Lewis gave up two runs in the fourth inning and only walked two hitters but the Pacers offense couldn’t capitalize on eight hits, including three doubles, to generate any run support in the defeat.

“Ponca City was beatable, but we waited too late to figure that out,” said Pacers head coach Marsha Cusack. “We can’t walk 16 batters and expect to win. We struggled in the circle and tried to make a run but it just wasn’t enough.

The Pacers have six regular players hitting over .300 for the season, but Cusack said that didn’t show up in the regional.

“We didn’t do our job at the plate,” she said. “We swing the bats. On paper, we should be winning, but we have died on the mound.

“I was frustrated. We could never come out of it. We certainly didn’t think Bartlesville could beat us but when you leave 40 runners on base, you’re not going to beat very many teams.

Although the season came to an, abrupt ending Cusack said she was proud of her team..

“This is a talented group of girls,” she said. “They played hard all season and in the end, we just couldn’t get it to swing our way.

“This year wasn’t disappointing. The ability and the work ethic of this group made it fun to coach them. They worked awfully hard and they gave all they had. I appreciate that effort from everyone.

“I like our program and the direction we’re going. It hurts to  think that there was maybe something else I could have done today to help them out.”
