ENID, Okla. —
Alva’s girls and boys will get a second chance tonight to qualify for the Class 2A state basketball tournament at the Chisholm Trail Expo Center Coliseum.
The Ladybugs (22-4) will try to bounce back from Saturday’s 40-39 heartbreaking loss to Thomas in the winners bracket finals when they face Pawnee at 6:30 p.m. in the Area I losers bracket finals.
It’s a rematch of last week’s regional finals at Chisholm, which was won by Alva 58-35.
Pawnee won two games out of the losers bracket to set up the rematch.
Lora Riley had 23 points for Alva in the last meeting, while Jalen Hobbs had 20.
The Ladybugs are trying to reach the state tournament for the first time since 2006. Fairview qualified for state on Saturday.
“We’ll be fine,” Alva coach Eric Smith said after the Thomas loss. “You’ve got to keep your head up. Thomas hit a last-second shot to beat us, so we regroup, bounce back and get ready to play Monday.”
Alva’s boys (23-3) will play Merritt at 8 p.m., seeking their first state tournament trip since 2006.
The Goldbugs lost to Thomas 60-54 Saturday in the winners bracket finals which snapped a 22-game winning streak. Alva hadn’t lost since falling to Woodward 61-59 on Dec. 4.
Merritt eliminated Crescent 58-45 in the losers bracket semifinals Saturday. Alva had beaten Crescent 53-43 in the regional semifinals last week.
“We haven’t had (a loss) since Dec. 4, so this is new territory, uncharted territory,” Alva coach Paul Duncan said after the Thomas loss. “We’ll find out (how they handle it) on Monday. We’re just excited to have another chance to play.”
