EDMOND, Okla. —
Daniel Martinez had his 11-match winning streak broken by Heritage Hall’s Nick Funches, 6-4, 6-3 in the semifinals of the Edmond North Tournament Thursday.
Martinez (27-8) came back from the loss to beat McGuinness’ Joseph Romano, 6-1, 6-0 for third.
Blake Young, No. 2 singles and Tyler Hallett and Zach Gwin, No. 2 doubles were both seventh. Connor Angleton and Ryan Leap were eighth at No. 2 doubles.
Martinez, who had beaten Funches earlier this season in three sets, rolled his ankle midway through the match, but contnued o play.
“He fought hard,’’ said Enid assistant coach Carl Gaebler. “I think it says something about his character that he came back and played his third-place match.
“This by far was the toughest tournament we have been in from top to bottom. These were pretty high caliber teams. It will give the boys an idea of what state will be like.’’
The EHS boys and girls go to Ponca City on Saturday.
Only three tournaments remain before the regionals next month.
