Lady Jets sweep DH with pair of walk-off homers

ENID, Okla. — “Can you believe it?,’’ asked veteran umpire Sam Roberts after watching Northern Oklahoma College Enid’s softball team win not one game, but both ends of a doubleheader with Carl Albert with walk-off home runs.

Kori Barrios, who went 7-for-7 for the day, ended the first game with a solo homer to give the Lady Jets a 6-5 victory.

Lacey Shipp, who broke out of a slump with a 4-for-4 day, hit a grand slam in the bottom of the seventh to give the Lady Jets (13-10, 33-14) a 9-8 victory in the nightcap.

“How exciting was that?,’’ said a happy Lady Jets head coach Jamie Roberts afterward. “That was so clutch ... you remember days like this — a doubleheader with two walk-off home runs. I’m so proud of the girls. The pressure was on ... we needed that after a rough week last week (being swept at Seminole Saturday).’’

All four of Barrios hits in the first game were for extra bases as she also had three doubles. She hit a solo homer and had two singles in the second game.

“I was just feeling it,’’ said Barrios of her walk-off heroics. “I wasn’t thinking home run ... just getting a base hit, it just came along. I was just having fun today. I didn’t think about it (perfect day at plate).’’

Shipp had gone hitless the first game and was in a bit of a slump for her, but she was ready when the Lady Jets loaded the bases after singles by Aaliyah Sebock, Barrios and Selika Shives.

“I was a little nervous up there,’’ Shipp said. “I’m glad we all stepped-up. This wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t for everybody getting on. I saw the opportunity to win the game, and set back on the pitch.

“I just wanted to try to get a hit, but I knew it was out when I hit it. It felt pretty good. I’m surprised, but I’m glad I was able to get my power stroke back behind me.’’

It was Shipp’s 13th homer of the season, and her second walk-off blast. Her home run gave the Jets a 4-3 win over Rose State earlier this season.

“But I’ve never had a walk-off grand slam,’’ Shipp said. “It doesn’t get better than this. It really helps our confidence, especially after Seminole. We know it’s not over until it’s over.’’

Shives, who pitched the first six innings of the nightcap, had given the Lady Jets a 5-3 lead in the fifth with a two-run homer. The Vikings took the lead with four runs in the sixth, and one in the seventh.

Marissa Dominquez, who pitched the seventh, got the win for the Lady Jets.

“We figured out we needed to put more runs on the board in the second game of doubleheaders,’’ Roberts said.

Summer Leitka got the win in the first game on the mound, allowing five hits, while walking five and striking out seven.

Sebock and Sydney Harrel were both two-for-three for the Lady Jets.

Alayna Holdsworth had a three-run homer for the Lady Vikings in the first game, who dropped to 5-18 in the league and 17-28 overall. Carl Albert had split with Seminole Tuesday, taking the league leaders to nine innings before losing the first game.

“You don’t have any days off in this league,’’ Roberts said. “That was huge and exciting.’’
