Jones Big Jay Award
winner at KU banquet
Enid’s Alex Jones was one of four Big Jay Awards winners at the University of Kansas softball banquet Thursday.
The former Pacer star is a two-time Big Jay Award winner after fighting her way ack from an ACL tear that kept her out of the 2012 season.
She started all 50 games for the 34-16 Jayhawks, contributing both as a center fielder and a pitcher.
Jones hit .324 with five RBI and had a team-high 11 stolen bases. She scored 43 runs.
As a pitcher, Jones was 7-2 with a 1.94 ERA. She struck out 51 batters 431⁄3 innings, while walking only 15. Opposing batters hit only .197 against her.
She will return for the 2014 season.
Three area girls elected
for Indian All-State game
Three area players have been selected for the North girls for the 18th annual Oklahoma Indian All-State basketball game June 15 at Fairfax. Mooreland’s Kayla Wilson and Jennifer Myers and Kingfisher’s Kortney Meat were all selected to play in the game.
EHS wrestlers to have
car wash on Sunday
A car wash benefitting the Enid High wrestling program will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at Family Video.
Worrell helps TU to
move up at regional
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Enid’s Chris Worrell shot a 74 as Tulsa’s men moved up from ninth to sixth at an NCAA regional tournament. TU, with a 36-hole score of 595, trailed Kent State (591) by four shots for the fifth and final qualifying spot for the NCAA championships.
Worrell is tied for 29th individually at 149. He shot a 75 Thursday.
Host Arkansas leads with a 573, followed by Illinois (574), Texas (583) and Oklahoma State (590).
Athletics’ Anderson has
stress fracture in foot
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — The Oakland Athletics said left-hander and opening day starter Brett Anderson, a Stillwater native, has been diagnosed with a stress fracture in his right foot that will require further rest and time on the disabled list.
Anderson underwent CT and bone scans during Thursday’s off day, the team said. Anderson, who is 1-4 with a 6.21 ERA in six outings and five starts, is scheduled to be re-examined in four weeks.
Manager Bob Melvin had said Wednesday that Anderson was still experiencing soreness in his sprained right ankle, including after pitcher fielding practice Tuesday.
