K-H's Meyer headed to SW Kansas

KREMLIN, Okla. — Three years ago, Christina Meyer’s collegiate activities plan was a hopeful shot as a twirler at Oklahoma State University.

Oh, how things can change.

The Kremlin-Hillsdale senior signed a letter of intent to run track on a scholarship at Southwestern College in Winfield, Kan., Thursday during a ceremony in the K-H gym.

“When I was in junior high, I would never have even thought that I would be signing (to run track) in college,” Meyer said. “I wouldn’t have ever thought.”

Meyer, who K-H track coach Kasey McCoy said is the first girls track member to sign for a collegiate team in his 8-year tenure, twice visited Southwestern and chose the Moundbuilders over the University of Central Oklahoma, which also showed some interest.

She’d never heard of Southwestern before being introduced to track coach Mike Kirkland through a recruiting website, but Meyer was sold after her trips to Winfield.

“I started connecting with some coaches, but the only coach that showed the most interest was coach Kirkland, and he was the most willing to work with me, and I feel like I will have the most success at Southwestern … It’s awesome. I can’t wait. It’s not too big, it’s not too small.”

After starting to take track seriously as a sophomore, a change of heart inspired by a her first handful of medals, Meyer reconsidered her initial college plans.

“I started thinking my sophomore year, what if I just explore kind of?” she said.

Three years later, in her final state track meet, she finished sixth in the 100-meter and 400-meter sprints, and eighth in the 200, the three events she intends to run in college.

Kirkland, who was present at the signing ceremony along with McCoy, Meyer, friends and family, lauded the K-H senior’s character and upside, a sentiment McCoy shared after arguably his best girl runner made her next step official.

“I could see Christina was going to be good from the start,” McCoy said. “She wanted it. She had the potential to (run in college), definitely … She’s a good kid, works hard, and you can’t ask for better, character-wise. It’ll be a big void to fill for the Kremlin track program.”

Meyer plans to study biology as an undergrad and is considering postgraduate studies in medicine.
