Acers heavy favorite at tennis regional

ENID, Okla. — Enid’s girls, ranked No. 2 in 6A, will be the heavy favorites at today’s regional tennis tournament at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center.

The top four finishers in each division qualify for the state tournament Friday and Saturday at the Tennis Center.

EHS should have three No. 1 seeds — Gabrielle Dick (28-5), No. 2 singles; Alex Dick and Kathryn Dillingham (31-2), No. 1 doubles; and Lulu Ruding and Savannah Blasi (13-1), No. 2 doubles.

Alexis Blasi (18-14) is seen as the No. 2 or No. 3 seed at No. 1 singles. If Southmoore’s Jordan Henry plays as doubles as she has the last few tournaments, Blasi should be the No. 2 seed behind Edmond Memorial’s Maya Hamaker.

Blasi, 11-5 since spring break, has split with Hamaker, beating her 6-3, 6-2 at the Enid Invitational April 1, but losing to her 6-4, 6-1 at the Edmond Tournament April 17.

“That could be a pivotal match as far as seedings for state are concerned,’’ said Enid coach Darrell Herndon. “Alexis is beginning to come on strong.’’

Gabrielle Dick is riding an eight-match win streak. Alex Dick and Dillingham have won 21 straight matches in winning their last seven tournaments.

Ruding and Savannah Blasi have won seven straight matches, their lone loss coming to Jenks’ Mariah Burke and Shannon Decker, 6-3, 7-5 at the Tournament of Champions last month.

Herndon, in what he called “an extremely difficult decision,’’ chose  Ruding over Madison Blevins to play with Savannah Blasi. Blasi and Blevins were 21-6 together.

“This is nothing against Madison,’’ Herndon said. “I made some comparisons on some scores and Lulu and Savannah looked like a little stronger team.’’

Enid’s main goal for regionals is to come out healthy. Russell Westbrook’s knee injury shows anyone can be vulnerable to injuries, Herndon said.

“That crosses your mind,’’ he said. “Sometimes, you’re just a twisted ankle away from disaster.’’

The rest of the field includes Moore, Mustang, Norman, Putnam City West and Westmoore.
