ENID, Okla. —
OBA football coach Mark Boyd should get to know a little more about his team after tonight’s scrimmage with Newkirk at Commitment Field.
“When you don’t have a lot of players, you can’t see how competitive your kids are in practice, because one group is better than the other group,’’ Boyd said. “There’s a pretty good distinction between our first and second groups. I’m excited to see if the kids pick up what we have been doing.’’
The scrimmage will be treated like a practice, Boyd said. No score will be kept and there will be no down and distance. Current plans are for the teams to rotate every 10 plays.
Boyd estimates his first team will play 75 to 80 percent of the scheduled 100-play scrimmage.
“You want to see if the kids like to hit,’’ Boyd said. “You really can’t do that in practice. It’s going to be interesting. We pretty much know who our top 14 players are.’’
Boyd is more interested in seeing what the Trojans need to work on.
“We’re not anywhere close to where we want to be,’’ Boyd said. “And we don’t need to be where we want to be right now this early in the season.
“We expect to find a lot of things we need to work on. That’s why we scrimmage.”
Newkirk is coached by Bob Underwood, who once coached with Boyd when they were both on the Enid High staff.
“We’ll do what we do in practice each day,’’ Boyd said. “We’ll throw some things out there against good competition and keep the things that stick and move on to the next page on the things that aren’t working.’’
Adam Eaton, projected as a receiver, asked to be moved to the offensive line “where he’s stepped up and done a good job,’’ Boyd said.
Center John Messenger, slowed by injuries last season, has played well. Freshman lineman Hayden Downing “has shown something,’’ Boyd said.
Junior quarterback Preston Atwood has had most of the reps under center. He shared duties with Baylor Boyd a year ago. Boyd is working at receiver. If anything happen to Atwood, Boyd would be the quarterback.
“We want to give both of them as many reps as they can to give them the best chance of being successful,’’ Boyd said.
Lineman Nathan Meier will miss the scrimmage because of a mission trip to Guatemala.
