Cowley sweeps NOC Enid cagers

ARKANSAS CITY, Kan. — Twenty turnovers proved to be too much to overcome for Northern Oklahoma College Enid as the Jets suffered their first loss of the basketball season, falling 82-73 at Cowley College on Monday.

The Jets led 40-37 at halftime, but had trouble with the Tigers’ press in the second half. Cowley had only 13 turnovers.

The Jets, who had been averaging 104 points, only had 10 assists, less than half their average through their first six games.

“We didn’t move the ball,’’ said Jets assistant Zac Howe. “We didn’t execute our offense.’’

Jordan Evans (21) and Ben Berry (11) were the only Jets in double figures. Earl Bryant had 21 to lead Cowley.

“You never want to take any losses, but we can learn from this,’’ Howe said. “We have to put our hard hats on, correct our mistakes and see how we respond to adversity.’’

COWLEY 80, LADY JETS 73

Cowley’s women avenged an earlier loss to the Lady Jets 80-73, despite a 31-point effort from Breck Clark.

Inconsistency plagued the Lady Jets, who dropped to 4-3 overall. Rylie Swanson (14) and Kanesha Woods (10) joined Clark in double figures. Emilie Gronas led the Tigers with 30 points.

NOC Enid led 40-33 at halftime, only to be outscored 47-33 after intermission. Cowley opened the second half with a 14-3 run to take the lead for god.

“We really came out poised and assertive,’’ said Lady Jets head coach Scott Morris. “We handled being on the road against a tough opponent as well as any half we have had all season.

“In the second half, we showed some of our youth and immaturity. We got a little too comfortable and had a lot of unforced turnovers and let the crowd back in. That made it really difficult for us to get back in.’’

NOC Enid was only 16 of 25 from the foul line for 64 percent.

“We’ve got to do better on our free throws,’’ Morris said. “Breck did a great job finding her comfort zone. She’s a really strong player and it’s going to be fun watching her develop further.’’

NOC Enid opens Oklahoma Collegiate Athletic Conference play at Seminole on Thursday.
