PONCA CITY, Okla. — Tyler Berge and Abby Resendiz finished second and third in the individual competition to lead the Enid girls to a second-place finish Thursday at the Ponca City Invitational cross country meet.

The Enid boys finished third.

Berge cut more than 18 seconds off her time from last week’s Enid Invitational, covering the one-mile course in 6:08. Resendiz cut five seconds off her time with a 6:12.

Arely Ramirez was 10th in 7:07, four seconds faster than last week. Crystal Rangel, in her first varsity race, was 15th in 7:16. Irene DelaTorre was 22nd in 7:36, while Kirstyn Mazza was 25th in 7:44.

The Pacers, with 45 points, finished behind champion Perry (39)

“I’m really pleased with the girls,’’ said Enid coach Joe Miranov. “We talked about finishing hard in the race. The last 300 yards is a straightway into the finish. I told them what they did there would be the difference between getting second or third.

“The girls gave everything they had. They were passing people, which was different from last week to this week. I think they took a little more motivation for themselves for the way they finished.’’

Enid’s boys, with 65 points, finished behind Perry (52) and Ponca City (57).

Garrett Wallace was the highest Plainsman finisher with a fourth-place time of 11:16 over two miles. He took 23 seconds off his time from last week.

Gavin Lack was eighth in 12:16, followed by Jake Taylor, 12th, 12:22; Nate House, 20th, 13:17; and Ethan Atwood, 27th, 14:14.

“The boys performed better as a team,’’ Miranov said. “We’re young. A performance like this can give them some confidence for the rest of the season.’’

The EHS harriers will be back in action at Owasso next Thursday.
