Sports briefs for 8-22-13

ENID, Okla. — Miss Rodeo Oklahoma

Alumni tourney Saturday

The sixth annual Miss Rodeo Oklahoma Alumni Golf Klassic, sponsored by Rib Crib, will be held at noon Saturday at Pheasant Run Golf Club.

Registration and lunch will be served from 10 a.m. to noon. Entry fee is $75 per player or $300 per team, and includes lunch, green fee and cart.

Prizes include team awards, hole-in-one contest, longest drive, door prizes and more.

Registration forms are available at Tournament proceeds go to the Miss Rodeo Oklahoma Scholarship Endowment.

The 2013 and 2014 Miss Oklahoma Rodeo Ladies in Waiting will be at Rib Crib at 11 a.m. Saturday. Lauren Elise Wade of Enid is the 2014 Miss Rodeo Oklahoma Teen. For information, contact Jacquetta Perry at 747-7435.

EHS volleyers

to visit Glenpool

Enid’s volleyball team, coming off a sweep of Shawnee Tuesday, visits Glenpool for a 6 p.m. varsity match today.

The Pacers (8-3) are ranked No. 14 in this week’s Class 6A rankings. Glenpool is not ranked. Enid beat Glenpool at last week’s Sand Springs Tournament.

Area teams ranked in

A number of area teams are ranked in the first fast pitch rankings released this week by the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association.

The first rankings did not include Class 6A or 5A. Ranked are Woodward, No. 13, Class 4A; Crescent, No. 10, 2A; Mooreland, No. 6, Class A; Pioneer, No. 14, Class A; Ringwood, No. 16, Class A; Shattuck No. 8, Class B; Covington-Douglas, No. 13, Class B; and Okarche, No. 18, Class B.

OU intrasquad volleyball

scrimmage Saturday

NORMAN — University of Oklahoma head volleyball coach Santiago Restrepo said the team’s annual Crimson & Cream scrimmage has been scheduled. Restrepo said the match will be 4 p.m. Saturday and is open to the public.  The season opener is Aug. 30 in Kalamazoo, Mich., against Milwaukee as part of the Holiday Inn West Invitational.

    DBAT Gallegos, who has been battling adversity all season (lost five players through injuries) took advantage of their opportunities in beating Metroplex rival Dallas Mustangs, 3-0 Sunday in the finals of the Connie South Plains Regional.
    The victory put the DBAT (34-7) into the Connie Mack World Series, which begins Friday at Farmington, N.M.

  • Meadowlake retains Enid Ryder Cup

    Jay Betchan might have a statement a week before he tries to defend his Wheat Capital championship next week.
    Betchan completed a perfect 3-0 record for Meadowlake with a 6-and-4 win over John Petersen as the Municipal Course took the Enid Ryder Cup for the fourth straight year, 131⁄2-101⁄2 overall.
    The two teams split six singles matches Sunday at Oakwood in the final day of the three-day competition.

    It was with a twinge of sadness watching the Baseball Hall of Fame ceremony on Sunday, knowing Oklahoma’s Allie Reynolds still is not in the Hall of Fame and there’s a good chance he won’t be in.

    Frank Thomas choked back tears, Joe Torre apologized for leaving people out of his speech and Tony La Russa said he felt uneasy.
    Being enshrined in the Hall of Fame can have those effects, even on the greats.
    Thomas, pitchers Tom Glavine and Greg Maddux, and managers Bobby Cox, Torre and La Russa were inducted into the baseball shrine Sunday, and all paid special tribute to their families before an adoring crowd of nearly 50,000.

  • Gordon nails restart to win Brickyard 400

     With a fifth Brickyard 400 victory on the line Sunday, Jeff Gordon looked like the driver he was 20 years ago.
    Gordon nailed the final restart of the race — no given because restarts have been Gordon’s Achilles heel — to pass Hendrick Motorsports teammate Kasey Kahne with 17 laps remaining at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
